The BMW Group launched the new Mini Cooper S Convertible in India at INR 34.9 lakh (ex-showroom). As the name suggest, the biggest head turner to this car is a fully automatic electrically powered soft top that opens or closes in 18 second sand works up to speeds of 40kmph. The new Mini Cooper S Convertible also gets a fully integrated rollover protection system and a wind deflector that can be fit behind the front seats to reduce turbulence. This soft top can also be optioned with a Union Jack print (See last image at the bottom of this post) in the Mini Yours version.
Aesthetically, it looks identical to the hard top version. It has the same sculpted bonnet with the sleek air intake and typical Mini dimensions of a low slung ‘pocket rocket’. Even though, it has far outgrown the pocket for the Mini is by no means a small car. In fact it is much larger than the old one but still retains the Mini character. The boot boasts of 215-litres of luggage space. And the whole car sits on 17-inch wheels.
Like the standard Mini Cooper S, the convertible version is offered with a bunch of optional features like ambient interior lighting, a head-up display, a Harman Kardon music system and a larger 8.8inch screen with a touch-sensitive controller as a part of the Wired Package. BMW is also offering something known as the Excitement Package which featured LED interior and amboent lighting along with a projection of the Mini logo on the ground on the driver’s side when the door is opened. And for those looking for an extra pliant ride there is the optional Dynamic Damper Control which helps keep the car more stable over undulations resulting in a better ride. However be warned that the cost of all these optional packages and features will add up to substantial amount when you’re writing the cheque.
The Cooper S Convertible is powered by the same 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that powers the Cooper S. The engine makes 192PS of max power and 280Nm of peak torque. The engine is mated to a 6-seed Steptronic automatic transmission and can be driven in one of three modes – the standard MID mode, Sport Mode and Green Mode. It can do a 100kmph from standtill in 7.1s and boasts of a top speed of 233kmph.
Standard on the Mini Cooper S Convertible however, is a multi-function steering wheel, sports seats, a brake energy recovery system and a start/stop function. Standard safety features include stability control, a crash sensor, cornering brake control and brake assist.
